The Imperial Republic of New Rome commonly called the Imperial Republic, is a Republic on the Yunami continent in the Aeneid region. It is bordered on the north by various nations, and by the Aeneid sea on the east, west, and south. The Imperial Republic covers over 18.6 square kilometers and has has an estimated population of 273.6 million. Imperial Republic is comprised of 6 Provinces.

The Imperial Republic was first inhabited by the Yunami people. It was then settled by Rome, who suppressed and subjected the Yunami people. Over time, the Empire fell, and the people formed their own Roman state.

The Imperial Republic is a developed country, with a high national GDP of $2.96 trillion. The per capita GDP of $20,600 ranks moderately in the world, though the country ranks lowly in income inequality. The economy is fueled by an abundance of natural resources and high productivity, as well as a relatively free market economy that allows business to thrive. The Imperial Republic ranks highly in civil rights, political freedom, and economic freedom. The Imperial Republic is a recognized power, as well as a member of a major international organization, the International Freedom Coalition.

Etymology

The Roman Republic and Empire were one of the great civilizations to have existed in the world. The Imperial Republic is based around the territory of the old Roman Empire in the Aeneid Region.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of the Imperial Republic is as a "New Roman."

History

The New Roman homeland was settled initially by natives about 13,000 years ago. These Yunami people lived in relative peace and stability, with only small conflicts between them. They were mostly an agrarian people. Between the years 12 BCE and 10 CE, citizens of the Roman Empire settled the land. They were members of the Cult of Neptune. Neptune was not a well accepted God, so these people went in search of a new land to worship their religion without being persecuted. The Romans took over the land, conquering the native people with the Legion. They established the city of New Rome where they initially landed.

Geography

Demographics

Population

The Imperial Republic has over 273.6 Million citizens. The modern census is taken every 5 years, beginning in 1800. The majority is Caucasian, though there is a large Nifonese population.

Language

The official national language is Modern Latin. It is taught in all schools. Other languages include Nifonese, spoken by a minority in the Toskajin region. The last semi major language is Yunamoin.

Religion

The government is a strictly secular organization, though in the past few months that has been partially reversed. The Illegal Caesar Bumcinum allowed a constitutional amendment to make Roman Paganism the official state religion. This amendment now allows religion to be openly referenced in public institutions. But despite this, the population is religious. About 57% of the population practices Roman Paganism. There is also a large part of the population that is Atheist. Experts say this is due to the vast interest in science and technology that the government has. About 23% of the population is Atheist. About 15% of the population is Christian. Most of the Christian population is Romhon, and reside in the Toskajin region. The rest of the population include 2.5% Jewish, 1.5% Muslim, and 1% are other religions.

Race

Government

The Imperial Republic of New Rome is a unitary semi-presidential democratic republic. The Caesar is selected by the people, and serves for a maximum of 2 terms of 5 years. The Imperial Senate and Imperial Supreme Court check the Caesar's power. The Constitution of the Imperial Republic of New Rome is the supreme law of the land.

The citizens of the Imperial Republic are subject to three levels of government: local, provincial, and national.

Local Government: Administers police and fire forces, as well as other public works. Protects private property rights.

Provincial Government: Main purpose is to elect Senators to the Imperial Senate. Also administers control the local Home Guard Legions.

National Government: Headquartered in New Rome, Domum Terra, the national government is responsible for national defense, foreign policy, and guarantees basic human rights that the regions cannot override, many of which are listed in the Constitution of the Imperial Republic of New Rome. It is also responsible for regulating inter-regional and international commerce.

The national government is split into three branched:

Executive Branch: Headed by the Caesar of the Imperial Republic and Praetor of the Imperial Senate. The Caesar can veto legislative bills, appoint ministers and Supreme Court Justices, and is commander-in-chief of the Imperial military. The Praetor acts as the speaker of the senate, and breaks ties, and introduces bills for the executive branch.

Legislative Branch: Made up of the Imperial Senate. Makes national law, declares war, allocates funds, and approves treaties.

Judicial Branch: Made up of the Supreme Court and lower national courts. Has the power of judicial review, and is the highest legal authority after the Constitution.

Foreign Relations & Military

The Imperial Republic of New Rome takes an active role in the world diplomatic stage. The Imperial Republic has been offensive in armed conflicts since its founding, and has invaded a few nations, leaving most of them, however recently absorbing them as full citizens in the Imperial Republic. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs serves as the nation's ambassadors to other nations and alliances.

Total the Imperial Republic military spending in 2016 was $307.66 billion, about one-quarter of the national budget.

The Caesar serves as commander-in-chief of the Imperial Armed Forces, which is headed by the Ministry of Defense. The military is divided into five branches: the Imperial Army, the Imperial Navy, the Imperial Air Force, Starfleet, and the Home Guard. Most of the branches serve professionally, and have no other occupation. The exception is the Home Guard, who serve as a modern militia for national defense and disaster relief. Conscription is legal under the Constitution of The Imperial Republic. Upon graduating High School, all citizens must serve at least 2 years in a branch of their choice. After the 2 year required period is over, they can either stay in the service, or join the civilian world. If they choose to leave, they will be in the Auxiliaries (Reserves) until they reach age 40.

For conscripts that wish to stay in the military after the 2 year period is up, the Ministry of Defense pays for their education for those who wish to be officers. Education for conscripts after signing up for one 4 year term after the required 2 years will have their education payed for should they choose to leave and become a civilian.

Economy

The Imperial Republic operates under an economic system of limited free market, where there is a market economy, though some protections from monopolies. The nominal GDP is $2.956 trillion. The private sector is estimated to constitute 56.5% of the economy, with national, provincial, and local government accounting for 43.5%. Unemployment is at 4.7%.

Tourism and resource exportation are currently the nation's largest industries, followed by arms manufacturing, and gambling. Mining and livestock agriculture are other important drivers of the Imperial Republic's economy.

Culture

The Imperial Republic is home to a small number of cultures, mainly Roman . New Roman culture is generally considered Western, derived from traditions of European culture.

Other cultures include the indigenous Yunami people, who still have small sects of traditionalists, though most have assimilated into the New Roman society. They are largely concentrated in the Yunkai Province in the South Western section of the Nova Roma Domum Terra (not to be confused with the Province Domum Terra).

The last major culture is that of the Romhon in the Toskajin region (Province), in the Northeast corner of the Nova Roma Domum Terra. The Romhon are New Romans who are of Nifonese decent. They were the focus of the Bumcinum Crisis, and were blamed for the terrorist attack which killed Caesar Augustus Romulus Magna.

New Romans have been described as very egalitarian, yet competitive, and hardworking. This has resulted in great economic productivity, and a center-left style of governance. This has also made the Imperial Republic a popular destination for tourists, though took a hit in late 2016 with the looming threat of civil war. The industry is slowly recovering. New Romans are also firm believers in equality, and do not think that one social class should have more rights than others.

Infrastructure

There are many public transport systems. Bus, rail, and subway systems do exist, and many people in Urban areas use them, and prefer them to cars. In fact, only 1 in 27 own a car in New Roman cities. The people are also known to walk or bike to work to avoid traffic and transit fees.

The airline industry is also privately owned. Like most other industrialized nations, most airports are publicly owned and run. New Carthage International Airport is one of the busiest in the IRNR, serving not only the Imperial Republic, but acting as a hub for most of the Aeneid Region.

Energy

About 25% of the Imperial Republic's electricity comes from solar power plants. Other electricity sources are from windy areas, especially along the coast, where turbines capture the wind and use it for energy. Coastal areas also use Hydroelectric plants for their electricity. New Romans have always prided themselves on use of alternate energy sources. Most of the Imperial Republic's automobiles uses petroleum, although many domestic manufacturers produce hybrid and, more recently, total electric cars.
