Alayenia is a state in the south central region of the Radiatian Federation. It is by far the most populous Radiatian state, and the 10th most extensive. It is home to Exegrad, the nation's largest city and New Aliyas, the nation's 5th largest city. Alayenia contains nine cities with populations of over one million.
Going anti-clockwise, the state is bordered by Radia to the southwest, Tchort to the west, Saku and South Corpshire to the northwest, Diifgrao and New Vashura to the north, Detzertscha to the east and the Republic of Numongolis to the south.
Alayenia is believed to have been inhabited by steppe-dwelling nomads since the before the year LFD 500 (500 AD), when it is believed that the city of Aliyas was founded, which became the centre of a kingdom known as "Alayenia".
In LAI 513 the city of Aliyas was burnt to the ground by the Radians, destroying almost all historical records of the city and civilisation. The ruins remained somewhat inhabited and are known today as "Old Aliyas".
Alayenia was controlled by Radia although it is believed to have regained its own sovereignty at some point during the 17th century.
Alayenia was a founding member of the Radiatian Union, and was an integral state in the Radiatian People's Socialist Union.
It was the first state to secede from the RPSU following the fall of communism and existed as an independent nation for 5 years, before re-joining the Radiatian Federation in LET 19.
The climate is extremely diverse, with the state divided by the Yissell Mountain range, which seperates the more humid, fertile plains of western Alayenia from the more arid steppe and desert of eastern Alayenia.
Alayenia is the richest state in the Radiatian Federation, with the highest GDP in the nation. Finance, entertainment, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and retail are the state's major industries. It is the state most visited by foreign nationals, and it contains the most Radiatian Fortune 500 companies in the nation.
Alayenia is believed to be the oldest civilisation in the Radiatian Federation with the city of Aliyas having been founded around the year LFD 500 (circa 400-500 CE).
It is believed that the original Alayenians were descendents of nomads who wandered the steppes.
Alayenia became a fairly sophisticated civilisation, forming trade routes with other nations in the area, which would eventually include Radia.
Alayenia and Radia warred with each other on many occasions, invading Radia in LAI 455. However in LAI 458 the tide turned on Alayenia, and the Radians conquered it, burning Alayenian King Peesa III alive publicly.
In LAI 513 the Alayenians attempted to rebel, which led to the Radians burning the city of Aliyas to the ground.
Despite this, Alayenia later devolved into its own kingdom, sometime in the dark ages between LAI 600 and LAI 800 - however few, if any, historical records of this time period remain.
It was also the first state to secede from the RPSU after the fall of communism and existed as the Republic of Alayenia for 5 years between LET 14 and LET 19.
Alayenia is the 10th largest Radiatian state by landmass, at 650,000 km².
Geographically it is very diverse, bisected by the Yissell Mountain range, the second largest mountain range in Radiatia, which seperates the more arid northeastern part of the state from the more fertile western half.
The western edges of the Great Radiatian Desert touch the southeast fringes of the state.
The state is divided into 40 prefectures, which are also subdivided into districts.
Alayenia contains nine cities with populations of over one million, and two of the ten largest metropolises in the Radiatian Federation.
Despite the more favourable climate in southwestern Alayenia, the majority of the population lives in the more arid northeastern region, mainly due to the location of the state's two largest cities.
The southwestern region is more rural, and mostly made up of smaller towns rather than large cities.

The state is divided by the Yissell mountain range, which causes much of the northern and central parts of the state to have a mountain climate.
The Yissell Mountains produce a substantial rain shadow, which creates large deserts in eastern Alayenia, although areas near the Exer River, or near freshwater lakes tend to be less arid.
The majority of eastern Alayenia has a cold desert climate (Köppen BWk), although northeastern parts of the state, and those near rivers or lakes, such as Exegrad have a steppe climate (Köppen BSk) instead.
Alayenia experiences high winter snowfalls in all parts of the state, including desert regions.
Western Alayenia is prone to bushfires in summer, such as the deadly blaze of LET 13, while Northern Alayenia is part of Radiatia's tornado alley.
The LET 31 Census showed Alayenia to have a population of 40,000,000 - just under a fifth of the total population of Radiatia.
Alayenia has by far the highest immigrant population in the nation, being the most open to immigration and the most multicultural.
It is also the most emigrated to state in the Radiatian Federation, which has caused the federal government to start imposing limits on the number of visas it issues to people wanting to emigrate to Alayenia, so as to stop the state from becoming overpopulated.
The centre of population is located slightly north of Exegrad.
Race and Ethnicity
Alayenia is by the far the most racially diverse state in the Radiatian Federation. 10% of the population are either immigrants, or from non-Radiatian ethnicities.
Although most major religions are taught at school, they are taught as mythology and the Alayenian government has laws in place which prohibit such things as praying in public, street preaching, evangelising and distributing religious texts without prior permission.
Despite this, the Apostolic and Roman Catholic churches both have a significant presence in Alayenia, and there are a number of small temples dedicated to foreign religions, usually used by the non-native population.
Alayenia has the highest quality of life, and highest life expectancy in the country, at 80.43 years overall.
Prior to the creation of the Federal Health Service, Alayenia was one of the only states with free public healthcare, and healthcare remains a priority of the state government, with the Alayenia State Health System (ASHS) acting as a secondary source of funding and resources for the FHS.
Being a mostly urban state, most Alayenians have access to the FHS, however those living in more isolated areas have less direct access.
Malnutrition rates in are lower in Alayenia than in any other state, thanks to the state's comprehensive welfare system. However that state's obesity rate is high at 25% - putting it slightly above the national average.
Many deaths in Alayenia are of unnatural causes, including road accidents, hiking accidents, crime and heatstroke or hypothermia.
